“India: Imagined by Georgian children” was the theme of a recent exhibition organized by "Bharat", a Georgian–Indian cultural organization, and financially supported by the Indian Embassy to Armenia and Georgia. The event featured works by children from Tbilisi schools numbers I, 10, 43,49, 51, 53, 55 and 160, and pupils from Rustavi Public School.
The children’s pieces captured how they imagined Indian culture, life and society. Visitors to the event were astounded by the level of understanding shown by the children, as well as the attention to detail in their vibrant and lively works. The children’s passion for the ancient, colorful and mystical country was clear to everyone attending the exhibition.
The event was opened with a speech by Tamar Lamparadze, Vice-President of Georgian–Indian assotiation for cultural relations "Bharat", who was followed by the Indian Ambassador to Georgia and Armenia, Mr. Achal Malhotra.
Mr. Malhotra thanked the children for their interest in his country, and presented all the children that had taken part in the event with certificates. He emphasized the importance of such events for both children and Georgian-Indian relations, and promised to secure funding for similar events in the future.
The event was also “attended” by Zurab Kachkachishvili, Georgia’s Ambassador to India, who made a special appearance via web cam. He talked about the closeness of Georgia and India’s relationship, and their cultural similarities. He also talked about the recent visit to Georgia by Bollywood producers interested in using Georgia as a filming location.
Lamparadze also explained the educational importance of such events, told the crowd that Bharatma plans to continue holding such exhibitions and other similar events, as they encourage young Georgians to think about and explore different countries and cultures: “It’s amazing that the children have been able to explore and study India, it really shows in their very beautiful and captivating works,” she said.
Bharatma as an organization has a long history. It was originally founded around 20 years ago, but was re-launched this year. “Our organization has been working closely with Absolute, the World Child Association, we dedicate this first event to the children of Georgia and India,” Lamparadze told Georgia Today.
The event was held on February 24, at the Vernissage gallery (formerly Copala).
